The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, and a full investigation is expected to follow once the immediate crisis is resolved. The KM Barcelona VA was reportedly carrying more than 280 people and was scheduled to dock at Manado Port before disaster struck.

News agency PTI quoted sources saying, "AAIB has onboarded seasoned aviator RS Sandhu in the ongoing investigation of the Air India Boeing 787-8 plane crash in Ahmedabad last month".

Apparently, the AAIB approached Sandhu to be a domain expert in the ongoing probe, to which he agreed, the PTI sources said. This comes amid concerns raised by multiple pilot unions regarding the absence of subject matter expert in the team probing the crash that claimed lives of 260 people, including 241 of 242 on board.

Airline Pilots' Association of India (ALPA India) has been urging AAIB to include its representatives in the Air India aircraft crash probe.

The five-member team probing the crash is headed by 56-year-old Sanjay Kumar Singh. Experienced pilots, engineers, aviation medicine specialists, aviation psychologists and flight recorder specialists have been taken on board as subject matter experts to assist in the investigation in the area of their domain expertise, according to AAIB.

Who is Captain RS Sandhu?

Sandhu, who is Air India's former director of operations was a designated examiner for the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner fleet. He was the person who had taken delivery of the now-crashed 787-8 plane in 2013.
